My First Tipi

My first tipi, crafted by Rainbow Tipi Company in Lennox Head, was a sixteen footer with thirteen poles for the thirteen moons (each pole has a name) and two half-moon screen windows plus a pull-out verandah with screening in the back for extra ventilation. It was a beauty, with Wanbli (Eagle) at the opening as well as the base of the smoke flaps. I prepped the ground, raised it with many prayers and blessings, my two sons and the maker and much sage and sweetgrass. The site was only a short walk to the ocean. People in the region came to know me as the Tipi Woman because it stood out on the suburban landscape, it’s poles reaching to Father Sky. Many happy times were held within.
